Yo, Bitch! Did you hear Bill Maher using the N-word?

As you might’ve heard, comedian Bill Maher used the N-word during his HBO show. While talking to Senator Sasse, he came out with the “I’m a house nigger”. Comedians are known to push boundaries, but sometimes they just push it too far, they try too hard. We just have to think few days back to a completely distasteful photoshoot coming from Kathy Griffin.

Given the nature of conversation at the time, Bill’s remark actually made sense – during the times of slavery, the “house nigger” was a common term to describe slaves working in and around the house, as opposed to the ones working out in the field. However, Bill is not a history professor lecturing in college on a subject of slavery. He is a comedian, and could’ve gotten his point across without offending anyone.

Having said that, I can’t put the blame entirely at Bill’s feet. Just look at movies that come out of Hollywood, at music videos, at the way people talk to each other in real life and on Social Media… The N-word is such a common thing, that one can be forgiven for thinking that’s it is an acceptable, everyday word. We often hear black people calling each other the N-word. Guys – it’s either offensive or it isn’t. If it is, STOP USING IT! Just because you use it yourselves doesn’t make it any less offensive. Lead by example, show to the rest of the world that using the racial slur is NOT OK.

While we are on a subject of respect, what is it with girls addressing each other as “bitches“? When did it become the norm?

Is it all a byproduct of “equality”? I’m pretty sure that your grandfathers would’ve gotten in a fist-fight if someone called your grandma a “bitch”. Once again, you want to be respected by men, start by respecting yourselves.

You can address each other by your real name, by a nickname, you can call each other Girlfriend, or Подруга, or Mate, or Paisano, or Homie….

just don’t call each other Bitch.

Radicalised Atheists And Your Obligations on a Census Night

I’ve come across this billboard the other day. It suggests to mark No Religion in the upcoming census.

Be careful who you listen to.

Be careful who you listen to.

We just had a federal election, and if you remember, there were Australian Christians party and Christian Democratic Party thrown in a mix of all the parties fighting for the 150 seats in the big house on the hill. So why didn’t this “no religion” mob erect a billboard then? Why didn’t they try to convince us not to vote for parties associated with religion? And why did they spring into action now? A billboard this size doesn’t come cheap, so who’s paying for it, and who will benefit from it?

So you’ve missed few weeks (or years) going to church/mosque/synagogue? Is it really a good enough reason to abandon something that kept generations of your ancestors going, from your parents to grandparents to great-grandparents and so on…. And even if you don’t feel all that religious today, in 20, or 40 or 60 years time things can change. We change, we look at life differently. Make sure that what you enter into your census on August 9 will not come back and bite you on the ass later on.

If you ever identified yourself as Christian, mark it as such, if you’ve always thought of yourself as Jedi, mark it too. I mean seriously, if Tom Cruise, Kate Ceberano and Kirstie Alley could believe that the Earth was populated by little green aliens, why can’t you believe that you are a Jedi knight? In words of George Costanza – It’s not a lie if you believe it!

So before you start listening to a teacher of Religious Education telling you not to mark religion on your census form, ask yourself WHY?

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention – one of the people behind this “no religion” campaign was a former school Religious Ed teacher, and the other one is a former leader of a fundamentalist Christian church. Have they become radicalised atheists?

Which makes me wonder… were they spinning shit then, or are they spinning shit now?

Destroying Our History…. and Confederate Flags

For the past week America has been busy. Busy burning flags, editing them out of movies, removing references to Confederate flags, getting ready to demolish statues and rename the streets named after the Confederate leaders.

Why? It follows the tragedy of the shooting at Charleston church. The shooting suspect has been seen in a photo holding the Confederate flag.

Confederate Battle Flag was simply just that. A battle flag. It was never even a National flag, so how could it have flown over a slave nation or represented slavery or racism

Confederate battle flag

Is the Confederate flag a symbol of racism? Maybe. Does is have anything to do with the church shooting, or the murder of blacks in America that seems to be an everyday occurrence?  I doubt it.

In fact, of all blacks murdered in USA in 2013, over 90% were killed by other blacks. So we are not looking at wide-spread, racially motivated phenomenon here.

My first thought when I’ve heard about this idea of editing the flag out of history – “It’s just like Orwell’s 1984!” Not really surprising, considering the current political climate in America.

My second thought was – why is it, that displaying an ISIS flag, or a Hezbollah flag is perfectly fine, and Amazon selling ISIS flag, but removing Confederate flag is also fine with everyone – apparently it’s all about the “freedom of speech” and “freedom of expression”, but displaying a Confederate flag is suddenly an act of evil?

On emotional level I can understand the reaction. Innocent people dying is an ugly, horrifying event. An event that is sure to affect people’s ability to think rationally. However it should never result in us erasing our collective history. It’s amazing though, how often we engage in this kind of destruction of our history.

Lenin

Founder of the Communism in Russia

From the Tatars burning orthodox churches of Russia and Ukraine to the Communists destroying everything related to the Tsar family, to the current Ukrainian government destroying statues of Lenin and all things Commy, to the ISIS destroying mosques in Syria, to the Americans destroying their history of slavery, the story is always the same. Regardless of who’s holding the torch (or controls the demolition ball), from Golden Horde to the Communists, from Nazis to terrorists, from Whites to Blacks to Yellow, we are all engaged in one common action – destruction of the history of the humanity.

So maybe next time we stumble across something “offensive” or “undesirable” from our past, before we start looking for matches, I suggest we stop for a minute and think not about “here” and “now”, but about how erasing this particular part of our past will affect our future.

Our history, good or bad is what brought us here. Just like a tree cannot grow without its roots, the humanity cannot move forward without knowing its history.

Auctioning Off Virginity

A couple of day ago, as I was driving home, I had a radio on, listening to a program almost entirely dedicated to a decision by a young woman to auction off her virginity.

So who is she? In her own words, she is a 27 year old sensually stunning, highly educated, and charismatic American woman. Well, she would say it, wouldn’t she? I mean, she has to present herself in a best light possible in order to achieve maximum result during the auction. It was mentioned on a show that she expects to fetch over $400,000.

Virginity Auction

Virginity Auction

Listening to this show got a whole bunch of thoughts stirring in my head.

First, why would anyone pay over $33,000 an hour to have sex with a woman with absolutely NO experience? Even high-end escorts in Cannes during Cannes Film Festival can only hope to earn about $40,000 a night, and for them it’s an event they wait for all year.

Second, what sort of a sad person would be so eager to engage in an act of “defloration” as to part with close to half a million dollars? I would say someone very desperate and I suspect with a major problems hidden somewhere in his childhood.

But it also got me thinking about something else…..

Regardless of her motives, she lives in a country where she actually can exercise the right to do with her body anything she wants, as long as she is not breaking any laws. The worst thing that can happen to her is some unknown to her blogger will compare her to a prostitute – no real harm done there J

To take it even further, she is lucky enough to live in a country where she is able to “save” herself till the ripe age of 27, and not being married off before she even reached her teenage years, the way it’s done in a lot of Middle Eastern countries.

Freedom of thought

Freedom of thought

I guess the conclusion I’m drawing from this is that regardless of this girl’s motives, regardless of how much (if any) money she will make out of this, there is one thing that becomes very clear.

This one thing is more important than a thousand virgins, worth more than any amount of money. This one thing is freedom. Freedom to do what we want, freedom to express ourselves in a thousand different ways. Freedom for a 27 year old girl. Freedom for a pathetic old man who wants to part with four hundred thousand dollars. Freedom for each and every one of us to discuss it and make our own decisions.

Your Local School – Rewarding Experience or a Danger Zone?

Our Victorian Government announced extension to nominations and applications for the Victorian Education Excellence Awards.

This award is there to celebrate outstanding achievements of teaches and education support staff in Victorian government schools. What I like about it, is that parents and students are also eligible to nominate. This is a great opportunity for a wider school community to show their appreciation for teachers and other staff who are genially there for one reason, and one reason only – to give their best to our children.

Victorian Education Excellence Awards

Victorian Education Excellence Awards

This award should not limited to a school principal nominating who s/he thinks is a good teacher; or just looking for a way to give “the right person” a $50,000 bonus. It should not be limited to teachers doing favours to each other (you nominate me this year and I’ll nominate you the next).

As parents, we are the ones who ultimately responsible for bringing our kids up, for making sure they get the best education available. Who better than to assess the teaching efforts? Who will only nominate teachers that bring out the best in their children? So take this opportunity, weight all the candidates at your child’s school, think it thru and do your bit to make sure that the winner of this award is a truly Excellent educator.

While looking through internet pages, reading up on this Excellence Award, I’ve noticed quite a bit of excitement around the other bit of school-related issue – plans to install CCTV cameras in government schools. I almost skipped this news, until my eyes stumbled upon the main reason for the cameras…. apparently, it’s to reduce the number of attacks on school principals. Who would’ve thought that being surrounded by a bunch of seven-year-olds can be so dangerous? All jokes aside, being a principle of a Victorian school is a life-threatening occupation. The Australian Principals Federation even has a study from the Monash Uni to back it up. What’s in this study? Well, according to ABC, school principals were five times more likely to face threats of violence than the general population . Not to be outdone, The Age informs us that Australian principals experienced physical violence at more than six times the rate of the general population. I personally prefer the take on the matter by The Australian – they clearly are more serious about this whole issue than the rest. According to them, school principals were seven times more likely to experience physical violence than the general public. Seriously though, why would anyone attack a school principal? I remember a principal of Mordialloc Primary School back in the 90th, and a principal of Parkdale Secondary at the same time – no one would EVER even think of attacking these principals, because everyone in a wider community knew that these men live a breeze their schools.

CCTV in schools

CCTV in schools

So why the sudden fear of attacks? Is it because we are faced with a generation of violent, irresponsible parents? Or is it because the schools today quickly becoming a safe heaven for rejects, people who have this perverted idea of teaching being nothing more than a profession with a really long summer holidays?

Maybe it’s because some teachers don’t know how to spell, and feel intimidated by parents (and children) who do? Or maybe it’s because some teachers feel that they are allowed to bully their students?

Or maybe the real reason is that the principals are scared more of getting in trouble with the Australian Education Union for kicking out under-performing teachers , than they are scared of unruly parents?
